Community college transfer timeline?? When do I start applying??

I need the wisdom of this forum because my advisors at my CC are... not super helpful. Like they just say "start early" but what does that MEAN.

I'm finishing my second year at community college this spring. I have all my gen eds done and I'm on track for my Associate's. I want to transfer to a 4-year university for Fall 2026 (so like, a year and a half from now??).

My questions:

1. When do applications actually open? Like, for Fall 2026, is that Fall 2025 or Spring 2026? I'm so confused.
2. How many schools should I apply to? I have like 3 in mind but idk if that's enough.
3. Do I need letters of recommendation?? From who?? My professors barely know me because classes are huge.
4. Essays?? What do I even write about?? I'm just a normal person with a normal life lol.
5. When do I ask for transcripts? Now? Later?

Extra stress: I work 25 hours a week at a coffee shop so I can't dedicate all my time to this. I need a realistic timeline that won't kill me.

If anyone here transferred from a CC, please walk me through your timeline. Like:

• What month did you start researching?
• When did you ask for rec letters?
• When did you submit apps?
• When did you hear back?

I'm the first person in my family to go to college so I have no one to ask irl. Any help appreciated!!
